What Is the Appropriate Breakfast Bar Height

The typical bar height is around 42 inches. For your bar to work well with barstools, it should be between 36 and 42 inches tall.

Keep in mind that, in addition to walking space, you may also need to navigate appliances, furniture, or a wheelchair through the area at some point.

Before deciding where to install your bar, locate the wall studs. You’ll want to secure the bar to at least two studs, spaced about 16 inches apart behind the drywall. Use a stud finder to find them and then mark where the bar will be attached.

Creating an Extension Bar

This design extends from a wall and is supported by a pedestal at the opposite end, often used by homeowners to separate the kitchen from the family area. You can repurpose a salvaged porch pillar or an old barn beam as the pedestal, or opt for a pre-made 5-by-5-inch wooden beam.

  1. Start by screwing the 2×6 pieces together to create an ‘I’ shape, forming a support structure. Attach one end of the ‘I’ to the wall and the other to the pedestal. For a finishing touch, you can paint, stain, or apply a finish to match the top.
  2. Once you’ve constructed the base support, mark a small line 42 inches from the floor at each stud in the supporting wall. Ensure they are all level and equal. Also, mark the center of the pedestal on the side facing the wall.
  3. With the assistance of another person, secure one end of the central piece to the wall using two screws, one above the other, on either side of the centerpiece.
  4. Fasten the other end of the base to the pedestal, aligning it with the center mark you made on the center board.
  5. Apply a glob of construction glue along the top edge of your base. Position the top of the bar in the center and secure it firmly in place by screwing it from underneath.

Creating an Island Extension

If you want to add a breakfast bar to your existing kitchen island.

  1. Acquire a New Countertop: Purchase a new island countertop that is a few feet larger on one side than your current island. This overhang will serve as the breakfast bar.
  2. Don’t Worry About Matching: Don’t stress if you can’t find a countertop that perfectly matches your existing one. You can choose a different color or material that complements your kitchen’s decor. It can add a unique touch to your kitchen design.

Building your own DIY breakfast bar is a rewarding project that can enhance your kitchen’s functionality and aesthetics. With the right materials, tools, and a well-thought-out plan, you can create a customized breakfast bar that fits your space and style perfectly. Whether you’re enjoying a quick morning meal or entertaining friends, your homemade breakfast bar will surely become a cherished part of your home.
